Summer Lawn Maintenance

What:
Advance sends a team of lawn care professionals to manicure your lawn on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The standard services include cutting the lawn, and trimming around fences and other features. Also, advance will blow off any clippings from walkways and driveways. Custom packages including bed maintenance, edging and other specific needs can be created.

Why:
In Canada, summer is short. People do not want to spend it labouring on their yards. Instead, summer should be spent enjoying a well manicured landscape. The professionals at Advance Earthworks are friendly, reliable and trained to make your yard look great.

We have Commercial, industrial and residential divisions and are well equipped to take on landscapes of any size.

Spring Cleanup

What:
Advance Earthworks will get the growing season started correctly with professional spring cleanup services. We have packages tailored for every budget and need. These packages are for residential, acreage and commercial properties; and include:

Aerate Only – Core Aeration

Bronze – Power Rake, Hand Rake, Edge

Silver – Power Rake, Hand Rake, Edge, Trim, Mow

Gold – Power Rae, Hand Rake, Edge, Trim, Mow, Core Aeration

Why:
Spring cleanups are a good way to improve the growing conditions necessary for a healthy lawn. Each component offers a benefit to your lawn. Power raking and hand raking removes thatch and mold and gives healthy lawn room to grow. Aerating helps alleviate compacted soil allowing air, water and nutrients to penetrate deep into the ground. Applications of fertilizer and weed control early in the spring offer your lawn the conditions it needs to thrive all summer. Our packages will make your yard look manicured and healthy and save you a great deal of labour.

Fall Cleanup

What:
Advance Earthworks will clean leaves on your property; this includes beds and other features.  We will bag them and remove them from the property.  Advance Earthworks will also provide edging, core aeration, weed control, and fertilizer.

Why:
Getting a property ready for the winter is an essential for a healthy lawn. A fall clean up, with fertilizer and weed control, will maintain a clean looking property, give the grass the nutrients it needs to establish healthy roots and survive the winter, and prevent weeds from starting next spring. Lastly, a fall aeration will allow snow melt to more effectively penetrate into the soil in spring.

Sod Re-builder:

What:
Advance Earthworks will add top soil, new lawn seed and proper fertilizers (based on soil analysis) to revitalize a thin or unhealthy lawn.

Why:
Overseeding is critical to a healthy, lush lawn. Grass slows down reproduction rates after a few years. Over time, lawns that have not had new seed added will grow thin and unhealthy, making it much easier for weeds to overtake the lawn. However, many overseeding practices involve only planting new seed and ignoring a vital step, adding additional top soil.  Top soil is vital for vegetation (in this case lawn) to grow as it holds moisture and nutrients. Unfortunately, many new developments are not given proper amounts of top soil, or in established properties, the top soil has lost nutrients or washed away over time.  Replenishing top soil, adding new seed, and spreading fertilizer is one of them most effective ways to revitalize a lawn.

This is all done for a fraction of the cost of re-sodding or regrowing an entire lawn.

Hydroseeding

What:
Hydroseeding is seeding with a mixture of water, wood mulch, seed, fertilizer, and a binding agent. The ingredients are mixed in a large tank and then sprayed onto the prepared soil surface. Once complete, the area is covered in a green layer of mulch, seed, soil and binding agent. The components are designed to hold in moisture, creating ideal growing conditions required for germinating seeds.

Generally, you will see grass beginning to sprout within 5 to 7 days, as long as temperatures are good and, more importantly, the area has been adequately watered.

After the application, there is very similar care needed between hydroseed and new sod. Both need frequent water (we recommend 3 times a day for the first 2 1/2 weeks). However, hydroseeding establishes a deeper root system than sod, and therefore, produces an overall healthier lawn. Further, sod goes into shock and might not survive being transplanted.

Why:
Hydroseeding is a method of growing grass in bare areas. However, due to the process, hydroseeding is more effective than dryseeding and about 1/3 of the cost of sodding the same area.

Top Dressing

What:
Advance earthworks will evenly spread a layer of nutrient rich topsoil over your existing lawn.   This is done for newer or moderately healthy lawns. For grass that is thin or unhealthy, see our Sob Rebuilding process. Advance Earthworks will assess the lawn’s health and the conditions of the soil before top dressing the property to be sure the area will benefit from it.

Why:
Since many new developments are not given adequate topsoil for a healthy landscape, one of two issues will likely arise 1. Healthy lawn will quickly diminish because of lack of nutrients or 2. Unnecessary money is wasted on constantly adding fertilizer for nutrients.  The additional topsoil will help retain moisture and nutrients giving the lawn ideal growing conditions.  Further, the addition of topsoil will smooth uneven or rough areas.

Bed Development

What:
Advance Earthworks will add aesthetic features to a property such as rock and mulch beds.

Why:
Beds are aesthetically pleasing to a landscape and provide good growing conditions for plants such as trees, shrubs and flowers.  Additionally, properly designed and installed beds are low maintenance.

Sprinkler Installation

What:
Advance Earthworks will install an irrigation system that provides adequate water to all areas of the landscape.  These systems can be automatically or manually engaged and are designed to use only the necessary amount of water for a healthy landscape.

Why:
One of the largest factors in a healthy lawn is adequate water.  Many periods throughout the summer, rain simply does not supply the lawn with enough water to thrive. Dry, thin lawns are more likely to be overrun with weeds. Irrigation systems prevent this, and save time when compared to using a hose.

Sprinkler Blowout

What:
To get the irrigation system ready for winter, Advance Earthworks uses compressed air to blow out the remaining water in the sprinkler system.

Why:
Remaining water in the pipes of an irrigation system can freeze.  When water freezes it expands. This expansion can crack the piping in your irrigation system. Freezing water in the backflow assembly will damage the internal components. If this happens the sprinkler system will leak wasting water, costing money, potentially causing water damage and will cost a great deal of money to fix.

To minimize the risk of winter damage to the irrigation system, “winterizing” the irrigation system is necessary.

Sodding

What:
Advance will add topsoil, level and cover bare areas with sod.

Why:
Sodding is “instant lawn.” If new grass cannot wait for weeks until seeding has developed, sod is a good solution.

Tree Removal

What:
Advance Earthworks can remove smaller trees and hedges or cut down and stump grind larger trees.  The tree/shrub removal process removes both the exposed plant and the root system.  For larger trees that need to be cut down and stump grinded, anything above the surface is removed and the ground is replaced so visually it will look like nothing is there.  The bulk of the root system will eventually decompose.

Why:
Whether it be caused by age or improper growing conditions, trees can eventually die and will need to be removed.  Secondly, wind, heavy snow falls and storms can break trees and these trees will need to be removed.  Lastly, trees can cause a number of problems in a landscape 1. roots can cause damage to pavement, paving stones and pipes, 2. shallow rooting trees can break the surface of the ground becoming exposed on the lawn, 3. trees produce shade and compete for nutrients which can kill grass and other desired plants, 4. trees are extremely messy. These issues might result in the need for a tree to be removed.

Tree Trimming / Shrub and Hedge Pruning

What:
Advance Earthworks will remove undesired branches from the tree, clean them up and remove them from the property.

Why:
There are many reasons that make pruning trees and strubs a good idea.  Proper pruning can:

1. Increase health:

-Removes dead and decaying branches
-Thins the tree so that sunlight can reach it better
-Thins the tree so it needs less nutrients to remain healthy

2. Increase safety:
– Avoid safety concerns of low hanging branches
-Increase the strength of the tree

3. Restrict or stimulate growth

4. Improve look of the tree

Bed Maintenance and Weeding

What:
Advance Earthworks will groom and weed your mulch, rock and flowerbeds.  This is an additional service to a summer maintenance (mowing) package.

Why:
Bed maintenance removes undesired vegetation (weeds) that compete with desired plants (shrubs, flowers etc) for nutrients, space and water.  Further, if they are not removed, weeds can spread to other areas of the landscape.  Proper bed maintenance also improves the look of the landscape.

Litter Pickup

What:
Advance Earthworks will provide litter and debris pickup and removal from the site.

Why:
Each spring the snow melts to reveal an abundance of litter. Also, wind blows litter and garbage onto sites making it look messy and undesirable.  Too much litter build up can result in non-compliance with bilaws and a citation to remove it.  Having weekly litter pickup with a site maintenance package can keep your property looking clean and well maintained.

Parking Lot Cleaning

What:
Advance Earthworks will sweep your parking lot and pressure wash any areas that need it.

Why:
Over winter, sand and salt is spread on the parking lot.  The sand accumulates over the course of the winter, and when the snow melts, large amount of sand covers the parking lot.  Further, salt spread in the winter can damage grass.  A parking lot cleaning helps keep the lot looking clean and the grass healthy.

Fencing

What:
Advance Earthworks constructs wood, PVC, and chain-link fences.

Why:
Fences help keep pets in, undesired things out and give privacy to an area.
